MARIOTA LEADS NO. 12 OREGON BY UCLA, 42-30

pasadena, calif. One snap after Oregon’s defense recovered Brett Hundley’s fumble deep in UCLA territory, Marcus Mariota found an edge and scampered around it, diving for the Ducks’ first touchdown.

With those back-to-back plays, the Ducks (5-1, 2-1) demonstrat­ed why it has been seven years since they lost back-to-back games in the same season.

Mariota ran for two touchdowns and passed for 210 yards and two more scores as No. 12 Oregon rebounded from its first defeat with a 42-30 victory over No. 18 UCLA on Saturday.

“It says a lot about the character of this team that theywere able to flush (last week) and just keep chugging,” Mariota said. “We came out thisMonday, and you could feel the intensity pick up. … We believed in whatwe could do.”

Royce Freeman rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks, who built a 42-10 lead early in the fourth quarter with superiorit­y overUCLA. Cyler Miles threw for 273 yards and three touchdowns, Shaq Thompson returned a fumble 100 yards for a score, and Washington overwhelme­d California 31-7.

The Huskies (5-1, 1-1) forced five fumbles, recovering three of them, and sacked Jared Goff four times to quiet the country’s No. 2-scoring offense. Washington went ahead 28-0 at the half to bury the Golden Bears (4-2, 2-2) in a hole. Miles, a former standout atMullen High School, tossed TDs of 86, 25 and 11 yards. He completed 22-of-29 passes, and the Huskies ran for 111 yards behind Lavon Coleman and DwayneWash­ington to spoil Cal’s homecoming. The Associated Press
