COMMERCE CITY COPS ID TWO SHOT BY DENVER POLICE

- By Jesse Paul

Authorities on Tuesday identified two brothers wounded by Denver police officers last week in Commerce City, saying both will face charges in the events preceding the shooting.

Joel Jurado Jr., 26, and Carlos Jurado, 20, eluded Aurora and Denver police officers before the Thursday night shooting, Commerce City police said. Both were hospitalized.

Authorities, who have offered few details in the case and declined to comment on the investigation, say the Jurados were in a vehicle that drove into a Denver police vehicle when officers approached them on foot in a private truck depot in Commerce City.

Joel Jurado Jr., who was driving the vehicle, is expected to be released from the hospital in the “near future,” at which time he faces charges of attempted firstdegree murder of a police officer and obstruction, a misdemeanor, Commerce City police said.

Carlos Jurado, the passenger, was released from the hospital on Monday, his family said. Commerce City police said he was arrested on suspicion of obstruction, a misdemeanor.

“There is no additional information at this time,” police said Tuesday in a news release.

Court documents in the case were not available, and an Adams County jail database indicated neither man had been booked into the facility.

Records from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation show both suspects had been arrested on felony charges prior to the shooting. Denver police declined to release information in the case after receiving a Denver Post open-records act request, citing the ongoing investigation.

An Aurora police spokesman said he could not comment on his agency’s involvement because the case is being handled by Commerce City police.

The Denver district attorney’s office, which typically investigates officer-involved shootings with city police officers, said that because the shooting happened outside of its jurisdiction, it is not making an inquiry into the case.
