MISSING OHIO STATE PLAYER FOUND DEAD OF APPARENT SUICIDE

columbus, ohio A missing Ohio State football player was found dead Sunday, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Police told media the body of 22year-old Kosta Karageorge was found near the campus after a search began when he went missingWed­nesday. The senior defensive tackle from Columbus had last been seen at his apartment in Columbus, from where his roommates said he left to go on a walk.

Karageorge’s parents filed a missing-person reportWedn­esday night, and his mother, Susan Karageorge, told police he has had several concussion­s and a few spells of being extremely confused, according to the report. She said at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday he texted a message that cited the concussion­s and said, “I am sorry if I am an embarrassm­ent.”

University athletic officials said they were grieved to learn of Karageorge’s death.

A former Buckeyes wrestler, he joined the football team as a walk-on this season. He played in one game and was among some two dozen seniors slated to be recognized at the final home game Saturday against Michigan.

Alabama at top of AP poll again.

Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this season, replacing undefeated Florida State in a vote that was about as close as it could get.

The Crimson Tide (11-1) received 25 of a possible 59 first-place votes from the media panel and 1,426 points. The Seminoles (12-0) have 29 first-place votes and 1,423 points.

No. 3 Oregon received five firstplace votes in the latest poll. TCU jumped two spot to No. 4. Baylor slipped one to No. 5, and Ohio State moved up one to No. 6. No. 7 isMichigan State, followed by Arizona and Kansas State. Mississipp­i State fell to No. 10 after losing to Mississipp­i.

Spieth wins Australian Open

sydney » Jordan Spieth made his first trip Down Under a successful one, shooting an 8-under-par 63 to win the Australian Open by six strokes.

Spieth’s four-round total of 13-under 271 made him the first American to win the Australian Open since Brad Faxon in 1993.

CSU volleyball hosting tourney

fort collins » The Colorado State volleyball team, 29-2 and ninthranke­d nationally, will play host to a four-team NCAA subregiona­l next weekend— and the other three teams also will be from Colorado.

The tournament selection show revealed the subregiona­l will be at Moby Arena, and the Friday matches will be:

• Colorado (19-13) vs. Northern Colorado (22-10), 4:30 p.m. • CSU vs. Denver (27-6), 6:30 p.m. The winners meet Saturday at 4:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the national tournament’s Sweet 16 and a four-team regional in Minneapoli­s.

L.A. Galaxy advances to MLS Cup

seattle » Landon Donovan’s career will end on a fitting stage.

The Los Angeles Galaxy got a second-half goal by Juninho to advance past the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference final and into the MLS Cup.
