Broncos have plenty of picks to trade

- By Mike Klis

When the pick is No. 28 and the goal is No. 1, John Elway has but one way to go.

I would be surprised if the Broncos’ general manager doesn’t go beyond his unlimited text data in an attempt to trade up from his team’s No. 28 draft slot. With 10 draft picks, Elway has the ammunition to barter. And, as a team that won four consecutive division titles and is all in to win this season, the Broncos don’t have 10 spots available on their roster. Why waste all those draft picks?

A check of the draftvalue board reveals the Broncos could use their third-round selection and one of their fifth-round picks and move up to No. 20, where Dealin’ Chip Kelly is nothing if not open-minded.

The Broncos might have to move up those eight slots to get a right tackle they covet because Cincinnati (No. 21), Detroit (No. 23) and Carolina (No. 25) also are in the tackle market.

They stood up one by one last Monday and stated their name and position.

Gary Kubiak began his first team meeting as Broncos coach by showing his players a montage of 20 key plays that won the past 20 Super Bowls.

He wasn’t the only new guy in the team’s auditorium. Besides heavy turnover within their coaching staff during the offseason, the Broncos have 16 players on their roster who weren’t around Dove Valley last year.

So Kubiak had everyone stand up and introduce themselves by stating their name and position.

By all accounts, everyone played along. Emmanuel Sanders, wide receiver. Owen Daniels, tight end. Steven Johnson, linebacker.

The introductions moved to the back of the room. Von Miller, defense. Not strongside linebacker. Defense.

“I’m out there to stop the other guys,’’ Miller said later when asked to explain his nonspecific position. “I don’t look at it as this is my only job. I’m on defense. My job is to stop the other guys and get the ball back for the offense.

“Cover receivers, whatever they ask me to do. I’m a Swiss Army knife. I’ve got a nice, big blade on there. But I’m a Swiss Army knife.”

That big blade is Miller’s ability to rush the passer.
