A suspected drunken man managed to trap himself in a maze of rural Douglas County fencing during an off-road jaunt early Thursday that led to his incarceration.

The alleged drunken driver was driving his SUV on Happy Canyon Road near Interstate 25 just after 1 a.m. when he veered off the road and onto private property.

The man, whose name has not been released, claims he has no idea how that happened.

It was a bumpy, frustrating episode, according to Lauren LeKander, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

“Somehow he went off the highway. He went 200 or 400 feet off road. He ended up in a field in some private property,” LeKander said.

Once he discovered he was encircled by fencing, he drove around and around looking for an exit.

“At one point he had gone airborne. He went over this concrete barrier and flew in the air,” LaKander said.

When the drunken driving suspect finally found a gate, he opened the gate and drove through it, only to discover he was in yet another fenced field seemingly with no exit, LeKander said.

“He eventually hit one of the fences,” she said.

The man came to the realization that he couldn’t get out and called for help.

“He was trying to get himself out and he realized he couldn’t and he called us,” LeKander said.

The man was arrested and taken to the Douglas County Detention Facility for booking into jail, she said.
