January 2014: Branson is hired by the Fort Collins Police Department from Butte, Mont., after conducting a background investigation.
September 2014: A Colorado State University student makes a complaint to Fort Collins Police Department’s internal affairs about Branson. She says Branson repeatedly showed up uninvited and unannounced, and forced his way into her apartment.
Through fall of 2014: Fort Collins investigators gather statements from three other women. One claims Branson answered a domestic violence call from her and then initiated sex with her. A second alleges that Branson hugged her and tried to kiss her after responding to a call. Another alleges Branson repeatedly stalked her while on patrol.
November 2014: Fort Collins investigators go to Butte, where they interview a woman who said Branson had sex with her after answering her police call. She says he stalked her after she tried to halt their relationship. Another woman tells them Branson tried to force her hands down his pants after taking a burglary report from her. Investigators learn that authorities in Butte declined to prosecute a sexual misconduct allegation from Branson’s family.
April 2015: Branson is sentenced to four years in prison for his guilty pleas to felony stalking and misdemeanor counts of official misconduct and unlawful sexual contact.
