Prolific passer will compete for starting job with Liufau, two others
While quarterback Sefo Liufau spent his Wednesday morning working out at Colorado’s new training facilities, news came through the Twitterverse that made Buff Nation downright giddy.
From Lubbock, Texas, another quarterback, Davis Webb, tweeted: “Thank you @ CoachMikeMac and CU for the opportunity... I have committed to Colorado! # GoBuffs.”
Just like that, CU’s quarterback situation got a lot more interesting.
Webb is transferring from Texas Tech and is expected to sign a letter of intent next Wednesday. He plans to graduate from Texas Tech in May, arrive in Boulder at the start of the summer and be eligible to play his final college football season this fall.
“I’m very excited to be a part of Colorado football,” Webb told Buffzone. com. “I felt the best fit and situation for me would be at Colorado.”
The Buffs didn’t feel too comfortable with their best options at the most important position on the field being an injured veteran ( Liufau) and two youngsters ( Cade Apsay and Steven Montez) with little or no game experience.
Liufau is a three- year starter who owns many of CU’s passing records and is 13 yards shy of the school’s all- time record. He’s 8- 21 as a starter and is wearing a walking boot on his left foot.
After suffering a Lisfranc injury to his left foot Nov. 13, Liufau will miss spring ball and won’t be ready to play before the summer. Liufau expects to be healthy by the summer. He will take the walking boot off next week.
Webb was the 2013 Holiday Bowl MVP but lost his starting job at Texas Tech this past season to dynamic sophomore Patrick Mahomes.
Webb is now ready to compete with Liufau, Apsay and Montez for the job at CU.
“Hopefully, when everything plays out, ( Liufau) is healthy, he gets a chance to do this thing, I get a chance to domine and we’ll see who wins it,” said Webb, who has yet tomeet Liufau.
Webb, who passed for 5,557 yards, 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions at Tech, said he picked CU over “four SEC schools, five Pac- 12 and a couple of Big Ten” schools.
