Bu≠aloes believe Webb is still coming to play QB

- By Brian Howell

boulder» While the college football world waits on Davis Webb to make a definitive call on where he’ll play his final season, Colorado continues to remain confident that the quarterback will be in Boulder this fall.

During a Pac-12 coaches conference call Tuesday, CU coach Mike MacIntyre reaffirmed his belief that Webb, a transfer from Texas Tech, will play for the Buffs this season.

“I talk to Davis Webb basically every day, almost every night, and he has told me every time he is definitely coming to Colorado,” MacIntyre said. “I don’t have any other reason to think why he wouldn’t.”

Webb, who lost his starting job at Texas Tech to Patrick Mahomes last season, announced in December that he would graduate in May and transfer to another school. As a graduate transfer, he can play right away this fall.

On Jan. 27, the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Webb committed to Colorado, picking the Buffs over several other Power Five conference schools. About a week later, he signed a financial-aid agreement, which didn’t bind him to his decision but did allow the Buffs to talk about him publicly.

NCAA rules allow a transfer to continue being recruited until arriving on campus at his new school. Other schools have continued to contact Webb, but he told Buffzone.com in late March that he was fully committed to the Buffs.

Then, he spent a weekend in early April visiting the Cal campus in Berkeley, Calif., and over the past few weeks there’s been plenty of speculation about Webb playing for the Bears this year instead of the Buffs.

“I just don’t like the rule,” MacIntyre said. “He signed the financial-aid agreement, and then everybody else can still recruit him and badger him and try to manipulate him, which I do not agree with. I think that is wrong, but that is the way the rule is. But I believe he will still be here at Colorado.”

Webb played in 23 games (14 starts) at Texas Tech, throwing for 5,557 yards, 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

Tupou coming back.

MacIntyre said defensive tackle Josh Tupou will rejoin the program this season.

“He should be here this summer,” MacIntyre said.

The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Tupou was a three-year starter at defensive tackle for the Buffs from 2012-14 but was suspended from school, and therefore the team, last summer after an off-field incident in February 2015.

Tupou was honorable mention all-Pac12 in 2014. He is expected to become CU’s starting nose guard in the Buffs’ 3-4 defense.

“To me, he’s a pro nose guard,” MacIntyre said. “He’s perfect for a 3-4 defense, and he’ll be a big key for our defense.”
