STORY ON BENCH FOR FIRST TIME THIS SEASON

- Patrick Saunders, The Denver Post

After 19 games, 77 at-bats, eight homers, 14 RBIs, 31 strikeouts and a lot of hoopla, Trevor Story took a seat Tuesday night.

The Rockies’ rookie shortstop, who blasted his way into majorleague history by belting seven home runs in his first six games, was not in the starting lineup for the first time as Colorado hosted Pittsburgh.

“I have been keeping my eye on him and looking for a spot (to rest him),” said manager Walt Weiss, who called Story into his office for a short meeting. “This is not the typical three-week start to a career. He’s had a lot on his plate, and I’m sure his world has been spinning, at times. But he’s handled it very well.”

Story’s last home run came April 18 at Cincinnati. when his average was .309. Since then, he has hit just .091 (2-for-22) to drop to .247, but Story said he’s not worried about his six-game slump.

“I feel good, and I feel like my approach has been good and I’m seeing the ball well right now,” he said. “I think I’m just missing a bit. That’s part of the game — a lot of ups and downs.”

He has certainly battled at the plate. He’s averaging 4.47 pitches per plate appearance, better than the major-league average of 3.88.

Story said he’s not seeing as many fastballs in hitter’s counts, but he believes he’ll make the necessary adjustments as pitchers attack him differently. He did admit, however, that it has been a whirlwind three weeks.

“I wouldn’t say I’m mentally tired,” he said. “It’s been pretty crazy, and maybe I’m a little drained, but that doesn’t affect me in the games.”

Story’s 31 strikeouts are most in the National League, but Weiss said Story is still in a relatively good place when he steps into the batter’s box.

“I think he’s still going up there with a plan and sticking to it,” Weiss said. “It doesn’t always work out. This a tough league to succeed in. But I haven’t seen him overwhelmed in any sense.”

Footnotes. Center fielder Charlie Blackmon (turf toe) was scheduled to a begin a two-game rehab assignment with high Single-A Modesto. He’s eligible to return from the disabled list Friday when the Rockies play at Arizona. … Shortstop Brendan Rodgers, the No. 3 overall pick by the Rockies in the 2015 draft, is off to a great start with low single-A Ashevillle. In six games in the past week, Rodgers hit .360, with three home runs, 10 RBIs and two stolen bases.
