WELD COUNTY DEPUTY HITS BICYCLIST

A bicyclist struck by a Weld County sheriff ’s deputy’s patrol car during a training event Saturday was hospitaliz­ed overnight.

The deputy was traveling south on 83rd Avenue and merging onto U.S. 34 Business Route west of downtown Greeley around 11:10 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle struck a bicyclist. The cyclist — a 60year-old man — was transporte­d to the hospital for medical care.

Greeley police Lt. Craig Miller said the man had a closed head injury and was held overnight at North Colorado Medical Center for further treatment.

Greeley police are investigat­ing the accident, and the deputy involved was not placed on administra­tive leave “as there were no clear violations of policy or procedure,” according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Mountain lions on prowl B

steamboat springs» The homeowners associatio­n for a subdivisio­n that sits between Steamboat Springs and Oak Creek is warning residents to be careful after three mountain lions were caught on surveillan­ce video strolling through a backyard Friday.

“Anytime we see anything like that we let everybody know,” Deerwood Ranches HOA spokeswoma­n Donna Midas said Sunday. The HOA sent video of the lions taken about 8 p.m. Friday by security cameras trained on the yard of a home owned by a part-time resident, Midas said.

Woman dies in apartment fire B

florence» A woman died in an apartment fire early Saturday. According to the Florence Police Department, a report of an apartment building fire on East Main Street was called in at 1:56 a.m.

Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller identified the victim as Wanda Blackburn, 76. Keller said an autopsy is pending, but no foul play is suspected.

After the fire was under control, Blackburn was discovered in the building. The fire is being investigat­ed by detectives from Florence, Fremont County and the Colorado Bureau of Investigat­ion.

Evans man sentenced to 40 years for sex assault. A Weld District

Court judge sentenced a 31-year-old Evans man to 40 years in prison Friday for sexually assaulting his stepnieces.

Judge Shannon Lyons followed a plea agreement and sentenced the man to 40 years in prison, followed by five years of parole and lifetime registry as a sexual offender, according to a release from the district attorney’s office. His name was withheld so as not to identify the victims. The man pleaded guilty to two counts of assault, sexual exploitati­on of a child and sexual assault on a childattem­pt, all felonies.
