Siemian reminiscent of Warner, circa 1999?

Readers talk and columnist Mark Kiszla responds

-

Fair comparison? Is Trevor Siemian the next Kurt Warner? I was a St. Louis Rams fan and closely followed the 1999 season. Perhaps it’s time to start hinting at a comparison between Warner and Siemian. I see the same humility, the same understated confidence and the same supportive offensive cast. Ron, daydream believer

Kiz: Whoa. Hold those Broncos horses, before your imagination runs wild. All praise to Siemian, who has proved to be better than I gave him credit. But Warner was a football fairy tale in the flesh. In 1999, Warner took over as the starter in St. Louis, threw for 41 touchdown passes, was named the NFL’s most valuable player and won the Super Bowl. Rather than doing all that, Siemian is more likely to be the backup to rookie Paxton Lynch by season’s end.

Funny stuff. The Broncos defense is a legendary orange worm that invades the hearts and minds of opposing players and coaches, leaving them weak and afraid. As a humor piece, a la Dave Barry, I found your column to be very amusing. You have to admit the notion of opposing teams exuding an aroma of fear, when facing a Denver defense currently ranked seventh is the NFL is pretty funny stuff for all but the most rabid of fans. John, laughs ’til it hurts

Kiz: Funny? Moi? Really? So that explains why people stop me all the time in the street and say: Are you Kevin Hart?

Giving credit. For all the accolades New England coach Bill Belichick is getting for winning without quarterback Tom Brady, I think Broncos general manager John Elway and coach Gary Kubiak should get even more. You guys just won the Super Bowl. You guys are undefeated against a tougher schedule than New England has played. You guys are doing it with a starting quarterback with less pedigree than either Jimmy Garoppolo or Jacoby Brissett. Doug, no Patsie

Kiz: The crack staff here at Kickin’ It Headquarters has established the Patriots as prohibitive favorites to represent the AFC at the Super Bowl in February. But let me also say: This knucklehead columnist has been covering sports in Colorado since 1983, and I have never witnessed a finer coaching job than what Kubiak did last season, guiding the Broncos to a championship with two quarterbacks, one a broken-down Hall of Famer and the other an angry young buck that moped when he got benched.

A little advice. You’re such a hypocrite, Kiz. Why do you even have a column? Go back home. Pete, wears flip flops to church

Kiz: Thanks for the advice. My mom lives in Tampa. Before going nightynight on the eve of the Broncos-Buccaneers game, I ate a big slice of a coconut cream pie mom baked for me. Parting shot. And today’s parting shot is as sweet as coconut cream pie. Love the way Mark Kiszla writes. His insights are spot on. His writing is smart and entertaining. Mary, not my Mom (really)
