Border War is finishing its run at Hughes Stadium Colorado State (2-2)

- By Terry Frei

fort collins» Kickoff was scheduled for 8:21 p.m., thanks to ESPNU, so one of the major questions about the Wyoming-Colorado State game Saturday was whether it would end on Sunday.

That time didn’t set up optimum conditions for those making the drive back to Laramie — 65 miles up U.S. 287 — or to other spots in Colorado after the Mountain West opener for both teams.

Depending on who’s doing the counting, and whether a Wyoming forfeit in the first matchup in 1899, the result of a dispute over rules, is included, this was either the 108th or 109th Border War.

Although both schools suspended their football programs during World War II — CSU for two seasons, Wyoming for three — this is billed as the longest continuous rivalry west of the Mississippi River.

One other game, in 1924, was scrubbed because of the death of Wyoming Gov. William Ross and then scheduling conflicts that prevented the game from being made up.

Saturday night’s game, the first sellout of the season and the fifth in the last three, was the 25th and final Border War at Hughes Stadium, which opened in 1968 and is scheduled to be replaced by the new on-campus stadium under construction and set to open in time for next season.

CSU had won 13 of the previous 24 meetings with the Cowboys at Hughes, most recently taking a 45-31 victory in 2014, Jim McElwain’s third of three seasons as the Rams’ coach. The Rams also beat the Cowboys 26-7 in Laramie in 2015 in Mike Bobo’s first season as McElwain’s replacement.

CSU, 2-2 going into the Border War, has three more home games in Hughes’ final season — against Utah State next Saturday, Fresno State on Nov. 5 and New Mexico on Nov. 19. Then it’s back to the campus for the football program.

Junior running back Brian Hill went into the night needing only 79 yards to become the all-time leading rusher for Wyoming (2-2).
