Patriots’ Gronkowski put on IR

foxborough, mass.» New England Patriots all-pro tight end Rob Gronkowski was placed on injured reserve after having season-ending back surgery.

Gronkowski, who had missed playing time earlier in the season with a hamstring injury and bruised lung, left last week’s game against the New York Jets in the first half with what was described as a herniated disc in his back. He had surgery Friday.

The longtime NFL star played in eight games, catching 25 passes for 540 yards and three touchdowns.

• Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney won’t play against the Green Bay Packers because of elbow and wrist injuries.

• Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin will miss his fourth straight game Sunday at Atlanta.
