MAKE YOUR MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH PLANS NOW — SHE WILL THANK YOU

- By Allyson Reedy

Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear dresses, or yoga pants, or sports jerseys, or even mom jeans. Yes, everyday mom heroes have a vast wardrobe of disguises at their disposal, but no matter what they wear, we see them, we know they’re there, and on Mother’s Day, we celebrate them in all their valiant glory. Here are some ideas on where to take that special mom in your life, depending on what kind of superhero she is. For the untraditional mom: Your mom is so rebellious that she bucks tradition and celebrates Mother’s Day a day early. What a maverick! Take her to the Favorite Things Brunch on Larimer Square on Saturday, May 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. She’ll enjoy a fashion show, a glam bar to make her even more beautiful, bottomless mimosas, food from Larimer

Square restaurants and — are you ready for this? — puppies to cuddle. Larimer Social: 1427 Larimer St., Denver, LarimerSquare.com, Tickets $55 For the traditional mom: Good ol’ reliable, tried-and-true mom. Trendy and newfangled? No, thank you. Save the Cap n’ Crunch foam and unicorn French toast for someone else. Your mom wants a classic bacon and eggs breakfast, and you’re going to get it for her. Head to Racines for food you can always count on. Just like mom. Racine’s: 650 Sherman St., Denver, 303-5950418, RacinesRestaurant.com, open at 8 a.m.

For the fancy mom: If your mom has champagne wishes and caviar dreams, then you’ve got to take her to Ellyngton’s inside the Brown Palace hotel. The Moet & Chandon will be a-flowin’ (for an extra $90.95, that is) and, if not caviar, the crab, oysters and shrimp will be piled high. It may not be cheap, but hey, the woman who gave you life is worth the Benjamins. Ellyngton’s: 321 17th St., Denver, 303-297-3111, BrownPalace.com, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., $70.95/adults, $20.95/kids 6-12

For the casual mom: Mom is tired. Mom is hungry. She doesn’t want to get all dolled up for an overpriced meal. Get her to the Early Bird, a charming little breakfast spot with locations in both Westminster and DTC that is super casual and super good. Bonus: Mom gets a free mimosa at the DTC Bird. Early Bird: 11940 Bradburn Blvd., Westminster, 303-469-9641 & 5425 Landmark Place, Greenwood Village, 303568-9297, EarlyBirdRestaurant.com, open at 7 a.m. For the mom with a sweet tooth: Olive & Finch Cherry Creek has an excellent pastry case. We’re talking cookies, cakes, tarts, bars, brownies, galettes, eclairs, tortes and petit fours -and then some. For Mother’s Day, all moms get a complimentary trio of macarons, the perfect dessert to follow one of Denver’s best breakfast sandwiches, the indulgent Croque Madame. Olive & Finch: 3390 E. 1st Ave., Denver, 303-955-0455, OliveandFinchEatery.com, open at 7 a.m. For the mom who actually likes to cook: Believe it or not, some moms would rather be a part of the action rather than get waited on hand and foot. For those mega-energy moms, Uncorked Kitchen has a special Mother’s Day weekend cooking class, where the whole family (mom included) can whip up a gourmet brunch of cocoa and hazelnut French toast, spring vegetable frittata, chorizo and sweet potato hash and strawberry shortcakes. Uncorked Kitchen: 8171 S. Chester St., Centennial, 720-907-3838, UncorkedKitchen.com, Sat.-Sun. 10 a.m.-1 p.m., $100/pair, kids must be 6 or older For the animal-loving mom: Baby goats! Baby sheep! Baby llamas! Baby all kinds of adorable barnyard creatures! The cutest party in town will definitely be at the Ritz-Carlton Denver, where a petting zoo will positively choke your heart with all of its precious little critters. Oh, and there will be food and drinks and buildyour-own-bouquets, too, but come on, all you need to know about is the petting zoo. The RitzCarlton, Denver: 1881 Curtis St., Denver, 303-312-3800, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., $89/adults, $40/kids 5-12 For the gamer mom: Two words guaranteed to spark a good time: “free bowling.” Moms bowl free all day at Lucky Strike, plus it has good eats and drinks, too, like $5 sour apple MOMosas and $11 burgers. And if mom bowls a strike, she wins a free mimosa. Lucky Strike: 500 16th St., Denver, 303-629-9090, BowlLuckyStrike.com, open at 11 a.m. For the mom looking for a good time: Mom deserves to let loose for the day, so why not throw caution (and two or three sheets) to the wind and be mom’s DD while she takes advantage of range Restaurant’s $15 bottomless local liquid bar? Just be sure she carb-loads on banana bread French toast to prevent that mom-sized hangover. Range Restaurant: 918 17th St., Denver, 720-726-4800, rangeDowntown.com,

10 a.m.-2 p.m. For the mom who loves Snooze, but not the wait: Snooze is great and all, but a three hour wait for breakfast is just a tad excessive. Enter Morning Collective, a new restaurant by the former executive chef at Snooze. It’s got that same playful take on the morning meal — think boozy horchata iced lattes and stuffed pistachio tres leches pancakes — minus all the hype. Morning Collective: 2160 S. Broadway, Denver, 303-953-9943, MorningCollective.com, open at 6:30 a.m. For the mom who really, really likes crab: Whether you want to take your crustacean-loving mom out for brunch or for dinner (or both!), Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar has you covered. Jax Glendale will have a Bottomless Crab Brunch ($48) starting at 10 a.m., where mom can eat all the snow and Dungeness crab that her little heart desires. Beginning at 4 p.m., Jax LoDo will be honoring mom with half-priced crab legs all night long. Jax: 650 S. Colorado Blvd., Glendale, 303756-6449 & 1539 17th St., Denver, 303-292-5767, JaxFishHouse.com Allyson Reedy (areedy@denverpost.com) is food writer for The Denver Post.
