U.S. BOBSLEDDER STEVEN HOLCOMB FOUND DEAD AT 37

Steven Holcomb, the longtime U.S. bobsleddin­g star who drove to three Olympic medals after beating a disease that nearly robbed him of his eyesight, was found dead in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Saturday.

He was 37.

The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Bobsled and Skeleton announced the 2010 gold medalist’s death, the cause of which remains unclear. However, officials said there were no indication­s of foul play after a preliminar­y investigat­ion at the Olympic Training Center where Holcomb was found in his room. An autopsy was tentativel­y scheduled for Sunday.

The native of Park City, Utah, was a three-time Olympian, and his signaturem­oment came at the 2010 Vancouver Games when he piloted his four-man sled to a win that snapped a 62-year gold medal drought for the U.S. in bobsled’s signature race.

Florida beats DU for lacrosse title

villanova, pa. » Senior Emily Conway and sophomore Julia Feiss combined for nine goals to lead the University of Denver women’s lacrosse team, but Florida defeated the Pioneers 18-12 in the Big East championsh­ip game at Villanova Stadium.

Feiss scored a team-high five goals and DU closed within 14-9 with 15:30 remaining, but the Gators put the Pioneers’ upset bid to rest with a 4-0 run.

Feiss, Conway and Caitlin Derry earned Big East all-tournament team honors.

The Pioneers will await their NCAA Tournament fate in the selection showSunday, which will broadcast live on NCAA.com.

The 26-team field will be determined after 13 automatic bids and 13 at-large bids are set, with the top six seeds earning first-round byes.

Germany given a reality check

paris » Co-host Germany came crashing back to earth at the ice hockey world championsh­ip by losing to Sweden 7-2, one day after upsetting the United States.

The Germans were brimming with confidence after beating the Americans 2-1, and this match was well poised at 2-2 early into the second period in Cologne. But 2013 champion Sweden— which lost to Russia in overtime Friday— stepped up a gear to top Group A.

CenterWill­iam Nylander atoned for missing in the shootout loss to Russia with two goals and an assist; while left winger and Avalanche captain Gabe Landeskog had a goal and two assists in his performanc­e for nine-time champion Sweden.

Meanwhile, the Czech Republic bounced back from a heavy opening loss to defending champion Canada by routing Belarus 6-1.

Penn St. kicker in treatment again.

Penn State place-kicker Joey Julius said he is again in treatment for an eating disorder.

Julius, who made headlines last season for making big tackles on his kickoffs, issued a statement on Facebook explaining why he was not at this season’s spring game.

Listed by the team as 5-foot-10 and 258 pounds, Julius said last season that he struggles with binge eating.

Julius has previously said he has battled the disorder for over a decade and said he would often eat a salad in front of teammates, then head back to his room and order Chinese food or cheesestea­ks.

Kentucky lands No. 9 prospect.

Five-star forward Kevin Knox announced his commitment to Kentucky. Knox, the No. 9 prospect in the 2017 class, chose theWildcat­s over Duke, Florida State, North Carolina and Missouri. Knox adds to Kentucky’s top-ranked recruiting class.
