A Broomfield man accused of killing his 4-yearold nephew with an ax was in court Friday as his attorneys asked for video from a camera in his jail cell.

Emanuel Joseph Doll, 25, was shackled at his ankles and wrists as he was led into an Adams County courtroom, where a judge agreed to the defense’s request that video from the cell be preserved for the case.

The jail’s cameras begin recording over their video after 30 days and Doll has been behind bars for 22 days, since he was found covered in blood at the home where the boy was killed.

The child had been alone with Doll in the basement, where he was found dead April 27 after family members upstairs heard thumping noises, according to an arrest affidavit. Doll is charged with killing Jace Emanuel Higginbotham, whose name had been withheld by the court but was released Friday.

Doll is accused of using an ax to kill his nephew, who died of a “massive amount of trauma,” according to police.

Doll worked for his father’s computer-coding business and was constantly using electronic devices, according to search warrants released this week. He was arrested in the backyard of the home.

The state’s public website listing child fatalities includes the death of a 4-yearold boy reported to the state April 28. It says the boy had prior involvement with the child welfare system, although no other details are public.

A state committee reviews child fatalities, nearfatalities and egregious incidents involving suspected abuse or neglect when the family had contact with the child protective system within the last three years.
