President Trump’s claims of a witch hunt over possible Russia ties

Re: “Trump claims witch hunt,” May 19 news story.

Donald Trump says “with great surety” that no politician “in history” has been treated “worse or more unfairly” than him. That’s the Donald, all right, always at the top of any list.

This man, born of wealth and privilege, has spent his life running his family business and making himself richer — the king of his private domain. He is not accustomed to accountability or criticism. Now he is president and the heat is getting to him.

David Brooks says Trump is not really a populist or a corporatist, but an “infantalist.” Too right. What we have is a socalled chief executive who is intellectually, emotionally and morally unfit to be president of our country. The grievous unfairness here is not how Trump is being treated, but how he has mistreated the dignity, gravity and power of his office. Fake news is a small potatoes compared to our fake president.

Ever since Donald Trump was elected, the Democratic Party’s focus has been to go all out to try to come up with something to bring him down. They have the full support of the liberal media in this effort. I see no attempt to try to work constructively with the Republicans for the good of our country.

There is one enormous hole in the claims constantly made by Donald Trump, his supporters and conservative media allies that all investigation of the Russian role in our elections, including Russian ties to the Trump campaign, is nothing but a witch hunt perpetrated by Democrats bitter over losing the election. Democrats do not control of any of the official investigations.

There is the FBI investigation, until recently led by registered Republican Director James Comey, whose public statements on the Hillary Clinton email investigation

are widely blamed by Democrats for ending Clinton’s chances of winning the presidency. Then there are the various congressional investigations. Since Republicans hold the majority in both houses of Congress, all of these are conducted by Republican majority committees controlled by Republican chairs.

If there is a witch hunt, Republicans and career FBI agents would have to be the chief witch hunters. Does that make sense?

The Democratic Party needs to get over its fixation on Donald Trump. It matters little if he remains in office or resigns, is impeached or institutionalized; the country will still have the Republican agenda at hand. Democrats need to articulate a clear, forward-looking, alternative vision of America and its future and they need to do it now.
