EX-DIAMONDBAC­K GONZALES HELPS WOMAN OUT OF CAR AFTER FIERY WRECK

phoenix» Former major league baseball player Luis Gonzalez said he was just trying to help when he got a woman out of a crashed car next to another vehicle that had burst into flames.

Gonzalez was driving with two friends when two other vehicles collided head-on in a Phoenix suburb Friday.

Gonzalez told media outlets it was a “pretty scary incident” but that he “just reacted” to get the dazed and groggy woman out of her car and to safety as quickly as he could.

Meanwhile, one of his companions helped the other driver while the second companion called 911.

Gonzalez is a Phoenix-area sports hero since having the game-winning hit for the Arizona Diamondbac­ks in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. He now works in the team’s front office. UCLA bumps out Texas A&M oklahoma city» UCLA assistant coach Lisa Fernandez made the play of the day for the Bruins.

Fernandez was ejected in the sixth inning after protesting a play at home plate involving UCLA’S Gabrielle Maurice and Texas A&M catcher Ashley Walters. A throw home led Walters to tag Maurice in the face. Fernandez argued there should have been an obstructio­n call, and she bumped the home plate umpire.

Rachel Garcia hit a two-run homer and got the win for UCLA. The firedup Bruins scored five runs in the seventh and beat Texas A&M 8-2 in Women’s College World Series eliminatio­n game.

UCLA played Washington late Saturday, with the winner to face Florida on Sunday in the semifinals.

First strikes help New York FC new york» Maxime Chanot and Alexander Callens scored their first goals of the season, both off corners in the final 10 minutes, to rally New York FC to a 2-1 victory over the Philadelph­ia Union.

• Ashley Cole deflected a hard shot in front of the goal in the final minute of stoppage time to preserve D.C. United’s 0-0 draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

• Kendall Waston scored twice in the first half and Fredy Montero snapped a five-game goal drought to help the Vancouver Whitecaps beat expansion Atlanta United 3-1.

• Three players — two of them defenders — scored their first goals of the season, Tim Melia had his eighth shutout and Sporting Kansas City moved back into first place in the Western Conference with a 3-0 win over Minnesota United.

Larson wins Dover Xfinity dover, del.» Kyle Larson easily won the Xfinity race at Dover for his second-straight victory in NASCAR’S second-tier series.

Larson has won three times in six races this season. He is a regular in the Cup series and topped the speed chart earlier in the day in the final practice for Sunday’s race.

• Graham Rahal won the first of two Detroit Grand Prix races, easily holding off Scott Dixon. Rahal won the pole earlier in the day and became the seventh Indycar driver to win the first seven races of the year.

• Leah Pritchett took the No. 1 Top Fuel qualifying position in the NHRA New England Nationals. Pritchett raced to the fourth No. 1 qualifier of her career and third of the season with a track-record time of 3.673 seconds at 328.86 mph during the third session.

Footnote. Wes Berg scored four times and had one assist in the Outlaw’s 19-13 victory over the Boston Cannons. Attackman Eric Law had three goals and two assists. The Outlaws scored seven goals in the fourth quarter… Brian Bowen, Espn.com’s last uncommitte­d five-star basketball prospect in the 2017 class, will attend the University of Louisville in the fall.
