Colorado gets past Portland

RAPIDS 2, TIMBERS 1

- By Benjamin Arthur

Alan Gordon picked a good time for his second goal of the season.

His header in the 89th minute gave the Rapids a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers in an MLS game Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

It was the Rapids’ fourth straight victory at home.

The Timbers, who are in second place in the Western Conference, dropped to 25-1 on the road with their fourth consecutive loss away from home.

The Rapids had their opportunities early. In the ninth minute, forward Dominique Badji had a leftfooted attempt blocked before getting the ball back for a header that went right into the hands of goalkeeper Jake Gleeson.

But it was Portland who found the back of the net first, scoring in the 18th minute.

Colorado’s Marlon Hairston was slow to close the gap on Timbers midfielder Sebastian Blanco, who raced free down the left side. Blanco sidestepped around midfielder Micheal Azira just inside the penalty box to deliver an uncontested strike into the right post — leaving Tim Howard frozen — for his second goal of the season.

The Rapids had three more great looks to equalize before the half, all of them headers. First, it was Axel Sjoberg, who returned to the lineup. His ball sailed just above the goal box off a corner kick from Mohammed Saeid.

Kevin Doyle had two chances — in the 34th minute and 45th minute — but both headers were off to the right.

But it was a different story for the Rapids in the second half.

Badji notched his fourth goal in the 51st minute with the chip in over Gleeson. Then, Gordon scored the game-winner.

The Rapids will play the final of a four-game homestand against the Los Angeles Galaxy (5-5-3) on Wednesday.
