PUERTO VIEJO, COSTA RICA

-

Who: Matt Bennett of Lakewood and Courtney Longtin of Riverdale, N.D. Where: The chocolate tasting terrace overlooking the jungle and ocean at Caribeans Chocolate in Puerto Viejo, Limon, Costa Rica Best meal: Grilled catch-of-the-day at Monli, a little hole in the wall overlooking the beach and main road in Puerto Viejo. The meal included everything from fresh oysters to lobster and was a steal at around $20 U.S. Best deal: The Jungle Adventure tour with Terraventuras. We went ziplining, rappelled down waterfalls, hiked through a river on the floor of the jungle and went swinging from a Tarzan rope all for $99. The tour also includes a basic lunch and lasts four to six hours, depending on how large your group is. Best time to go: The Caribbean coast is almost always rainy, but as long as you are prepared for a torrential afternoon shower, anytime is fabulous. We traveled in late December. The dry season is September and October. Best travel tip: Most hotels in the area rent cheap bikes. Spend a day cycling to Punta Uva (a breathtaking beach), and on your way back, hit the morning tour (9:30 a.m.) at the Jaguar Rescue, where you’ll get an up close and personal tour with baby sloths, monkeys and other wildlife. Then stop by Caribeans for a three-hour chocolate tour not to be forgotten! Submit to Paper Trails! Visit denverpost.com/papertrails and follow the instructions.
