SELANNE, KARIYA HEADLINE HOCKEY HALL OF FAME CLASS

Teemu Selanne and longtime Ducks teammate Paul Kariya headline the Hockey Hall of Fame’s class of 2017.

Selanne and Kariya are joined by Dave Andreychuk, Mark Recchi, women’s star Danielle Goyette, coach Clare Drake and Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs.

Selanne was elected in his first year of eligibilit­y after posting 1,457 points. The “Finnish Flash” had 76 goals as a rookie with Winnipeg in 1992-93 and won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007.

Kariya’s career was cut short by injuries. He was a point-a-game player.

Recchi (fourth year) and Andreychuk (ninth) were long-overdue additions. Recchi won the Cup three times and is 12th in scoring, and Andreychuk won it once and is 29th.

• The Dallas Stars acquired veteran defenseman Marc Methot in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights. Dallas sent goaltendin­g prospect Dylan Ferguson and a 2020 second-round pick to Vegas.

The Stars also placed goalie Antti Niemi on waivers with the intention to buy out the final year of his contract.

Ledecky wins Honda Cup

● los angeles» Stanford swimmer Katie Ledecky won the Honda Cup as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete.

Ledecky won five medals, including four golds, and set two world records at last summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics. She capped an impressive freshman season at Stanford with five national titles at the NCAA championsh­ips.

Heart issue sidelines Fairley

● metairie, la.» New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Nick Fairley has been placed on the team’s non-football illness list, meaning the starting defensive tackle won’t play this season.

Symptoms related to an enlarged heart, however, caused Fairley to miss offseason practices and minicamp while he saw specialist­s to determine whether playing football would be an undue health risk.

• Former Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green is jailed in Brown County in Wisconsin on suspicion of child abuse.

• The Panthers said Cam Newton threw his first passes since surgery in March for a partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder and should be ready for the start of the season.

Baylor confirms investigat­ion

● austin, texas» The NCAA is conducting an “ongoing, pending investigat­ion” into Baylor University in the wake of a sexual assault scandal that led to the firing of football coach Art Briles and the departure of the school president, the school’s lawyers confirmed in a federal court filing.

Baylor officials acknowledg­ed the investigat­ion while asking a judge to protect the school’s communicat­ions with the NCAA from attorneys for several women who have sued the nation’s largest Baptist university.

Baylor contends the school must maintain the confidenti­ality of the NCAA’s investigat­ion process, though the school could turn over some informatio­n to plaintiffs’ attorneys who make specific requests.

Appeals court upholds ruling

● san francisco» A federal appeals court upheld a ruling that dismissed a lawsuit filed by minor-league baseball players accusing Major League Baseball of colluding to suppress wages.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th District affirmed a district court ruling, saying the minor leagues — like the majors — are exempt from federal antitrust law.
