ELLSBURY BREAKS OBSCURE RECORD

- — The Associated Press

YORK» Jacoby Ellsbury set an NEW obscure major-league record on his 34th birthday.

He reached base on catcher’s interference for the 30th time, passing the mark that had been held by Pete Rose.

Ellsbury nicked the mitt of Tampa Bay catcher Wilson Ramos on a slow curveball from Jake Odorizzi in the fourth inning Monday night at Citi Field and was awarded first base.

Ellsbury set the season catcher’s interference mark with 12 last season and has four this season.

Rose, baseball’s career hits leader, had 15,890 plate appearances. Ellsbury reached the record in 5,308.

Fulmer will have surgery.

The Tigers said ace Michael Fulmer will undergo elbow surgery Tuesday and miss the rest of the season.

The 2016 AL rookie of the year will have a damaged nerve fixed by Dr. James Andrews in Florida. Manager Brad Ausmus said Monday that Fulmer will not throw for “three or four months” but that the 24-year-old is expected to make a full recovery and should be ready for spring training.

Surgery ends Dyson’s year.

Mariners outfielder Jarrod Dyson will undergo surgery to repair a core-muscle issue and sports hernia, ending his season.

Dyson didn’t travel with the Mariners for their seven-game road trip that began Monday with a game against the Rangers.

Meyer likely to miss 2018.

Angels righthander Alex Meyer is likely to miss the 2018 season after surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler had better news on lefthander Andrew Heaney, saying an MRI exam revealed nothing seriously wrong with Heaney’s shoulder.

Vogelsong retires as Giant.

Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong will retire as a member of the Giants, the team announced.

Vogelsong, 40, will be honored before the team’s game Sunday.

The Giants drafted Vogelsong in 1998, traded him in 2001 and re-signed him in 2011.
