Over and Under
One big show, one smaller
In the deafening world of electronic music, it takes courage to be quiet. Thoughtful trio Hundred Waters is worth cupping an ear to hear. Fixed around Nicole Miglis’ sonorous songs, the group mellows out famed producer Skrillex’s bombastic OWLSA record label with efforts balanced delicately between a night out and a day in. Take “Communicating,” its brand new album, which spills gorgeously from whisper-quiet ballads (“Parade”) to woodland fairy rave anthems like “Wave To Anchor” with cool ease. While so many bands beat you over the head with synth, this one uses them for a means to the subtle end spelled out in its latest album’s title. Catch the band on Sept. 27 at the Bluebird Theater. Tickets: $15 via axs.com. “Beans, meats / greens, peas / eggs, you.” With that seemingly quotidian grocery list of lyrics, Tank and the Bangas hit like ice water to the face. The New Orleans band made its world debut earlier this year as the winners of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Contest, a competition to select one local bands to play on an episode of the program’s in-office concert series. Tarriona “Tank” Ball and Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph — who appeared in local electronic musician GRiZ’s live show at Red Rocks earlier this month — lead the funk outfit, chopping up hair-raising falsettos with soul-food poetry. It makes for a thunderous performance, hot enough to cauterize crowds. Catch them at Globe Hall on Sept. 25. Tickets: $15-$20 via ticketfly.com.
