Prep football: How the top 5A and 4A teams fared in Week 5

CLASS 5A

No. 1 Valor Christian (5-0) beat No. 5 Cherry Creek (3-2) 26-14 in a victory iced by a fourth-quarter field goal from sophomore kicker Brian Brogan as well as a Blake Stenstrom-to-joshia Davis touchdown pass.

No. 2 Pomona (3-2) lost to Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) 40-28 in an out-of-town showdown against a Missouri powerhouse that made a state semifinal appearance last season and has won nine titles overall.

No. 3 Eaglecrest (5-0) beat Bear Creek (1-4) 42-7 on Thursday as senior quarterbac­k Jalen Mergerson threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in a rout at Jeffco Stadium.

No. 4 Regis Jesuit (4-1) beat Mountain Vista (2-3) 40-14 as senior quarterbac­k Justin Lamb has the Raiders’ offense clicking on all cylinders heading into the team’s Mount Antero conference opener against Legacy.

No. 5 Cherry Creek (3-2) lost to No. 1 Valor Christian (5-0) 26-14 despite a long touchdown pass from Alex Padilla to Dimitri Stanley that set the early tone for the Bruins and gave them a 7-0 lead after one quarter.

No. 6 Highlands Ranch (4-1) beat Westminste­r (0-5) 35-24 despite a 17-point fourth quarter by the Wolves that turned a game that was mostly controlled by the Falcons into a close contest at the end.

No. 7 Grandview (3-2) beat Cherokee Trail (2-3) 40-13 on Thursday largely thanks to senior Kyle Smith’s three passing touchdowns to Julius Carter Jr., Dayne Prim and Prentice Wilson.

No. 8 Fairview (5-0) beat Arapahoe (1-4) 26-17 as sophomore quarterbac­k Aidan Atkinson threw for two scores and junior running back Brian Moreno ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

No. 9 Columbine (4-1) beat Denver East (1-4) 48-28 on Thursday as the Rebels were buoyed by sophomore Tanner Hollens’ two rushing touchdowns as well as a scoopand-score play from sophomore defensive end Justin Lohrenz.

No. 10 Mullen (2-3) had a bye. CLASS 4A

No. 1 Pine Creek (4-1) lost 17-14 to Ralston Valley (2-3) despite 215 yards and one touchdown through the air from senior quarterbac­k J.C. Coulter, plus 127 yards and a touchdown on the ground from sophomore David Moore III.

No. 2 Ponderosa (5-0) beat Pueblo Centennial (1-4) 43-0 in yet another blowout, running-clock victory for the Mustangs as junior linebacker Nick Hoff and the Ponderosa defense posted their third shutout of 2017.

No. 3 Chatfield (4-1) beat Widefield (4-1) 38-6 as the stout Chargers defense limited the Gladiators to 58 yards rushing on 34 carries in a decisive win at Jeffco Stadium.

No. 4 Windsor (4-1) beat Grand Junction (14) 42-7 to put the Wizards on a roll heading into their Northern League opener against Mountain View.

No. 5 Monarch (5-0) beat No. 6 Broomfield (2-3) 24-14 on Thursday thanks to hardnosed play in the trenches as well as two touchdown runs from senior Justin Kiss and one more from senior Ernesto Chavez.

No. 6 Broomfield (2-2) lost to No. 5 Monarch (5-0) 24-14 on Thursday despite touchdown runs from senior Matt Foster and junior Sam Godwin.

No. 7 Fruita Monument (5-0) had a bye. No. 8 Loveland (5-0) beat Mountain View (23)

42-7 as the Indians burst out to a 28-0 lead after one quarter with junior quarterbac­k Riley Kenny throwing for two scores and running for another, plus a 37yard scoring run by junior Zach Weinmaster. No. 9 Pueblo West (5-0) beat Coronado (2-3) 49-7 as the Cyclones jumped out to a two touchdown lead after one quarter and never looked back.

No. 10 Vista Ridge (3-2) beat Discovery Canyon (2-3) 35-21 thanks to three touchdowns from senior quarterbac­k Jaylen Thomas plus 218 yards rushing and two scores from senior Jeffrey Crittendon.
