45-year sentence in roommate’s death.

COUNTY» A ARAPAHOE

Sheridan man who beat his roommate to death has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Michael Jon Stevens, 31, was sentenced Thursday for the death of 48-yearold Steven McManus, according to the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office.

Stevens pleaded guilty July 12 to first-degree attempted murder and reckless manslaughter, the DA said in a news release.

On August 29, 2016, Stevens called Sheridan police and reported that he’d killed his roommate. Officers arrived and found Stevens sitting outside their West Girard Avenue apartment.

Stevens told investigators he’d beaten McManus after ingesting methamphetamine. McManus took refuge in a bathroom, but Stevens broke down the door. He knocked McManus to the floor and violently kicked him in the head.

When McManus went limp, Stevens assumed he was “playing possum,” the release said, so he kicked him again. A neighbor told Stevens to call an ambulance, but he didn’t call 911 until about two hours after the attack.
