BUFFS COULD HAVE NEW STARTING QB

Carla Williams is leaving the University of Georgia, where she was the deputy athletic director, to be the new athletic director at the University of Virginia. The Daily Press in Newport News, Va., reported the hiring over the weekend.

Williams, a former profession­al basketball player, is the first African-American female AD among the 64 power five conference schools.

Williams replaces Craig Littlepage, who is retiring. Littlepage was the first African-American athletic director in the ACC upon his 2001 hiring by the Cavaliers.

Montell Cozart rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another TD, helping Boise State beat Wyoming 24-14. … Xavier Preston sacked Charlie Brewer on a two-point conversion attempt with 17 seconds left as No. 23 West Virginia withstood a furious fourth-quarter Baylor rally to escape with a 38-36 win. … Quarterbac­k Khalil Tate ran for 137 yards and a touchdown and passed for two TDs, including a 22-yarder to Bryce Wolma in the second overtime, as Arizona held on to beat California in a 45-44 thriller.

Summers coached on Mike Bobo’s staff when Bobo joined Colorado State. … Notre Dame cracked the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this season, coming in at No. 9, and Michigan fell out of the top-25 rankings for the first time in two years.
