Where to adopt dogs, cats flown in from Puerto Rico
Shelters in state also helped after Harvey hit Houston
More than 100 dogs and cats rescued from Puerto Rico arrived at Centennial Airport on Tuesday night as mainland animal shelters try to relieve their overflowing island counterparts.
The animals, which came from Vieques Humane Society and All Sato Rescue, will be dispersed among seven Colorado shelters, according to Duane Adams, vice president of operations with the Denver Dumb Friends League.
Sato is Puerto Rican slang for a mixed-breed dog.
“Ever since Maria hit Puerto Rico, the situation has been very challenging for the shelters,” he said.
This is not the first time Colorado shelters have taken in pets. Recently, shelters took in animals from Houston in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
The animals from Puerto Rico should be ready for adoption within three or four days of arriving at a shelter.
