MILLER NOMINEE FOR AWARD FOR SPORTSMANSHIP
Linebacker Von Miller was selected as the Broncos’ nominee for the 2017 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, given to the player who “best demonstrates the qualities of onfield sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents and integrity in competition.”
A panel of former players — Warrick Dunn, Curtis Martin, Karl Mecklenburg and Leonard Wheeler — will select eight finalists, four from each conference, from the list of 32 nominees. Those eight will be listed on the Pro Bowl ballot when players vote Dec. 15 (a team cannot vote for its own player), and the winner will be announced during the NFL Honors show Feb. 3, the eve of Super Bowl LII. The winner will receive a $25,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to a charity of his choice and a trophy to recognize the honor.
The award was established in 2014 in honor of Art Rooney Sr., the late founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Past recipients are Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald (2014), former Oakland Raiders safety Charles Woodson (2015) and Indianapolis Colts running back Frank Gore (2016).
Williams signed away.
The New Orleans Saints signed running back Jonathan Williams off the Broncos’ practice squad. The Broncos added Williams to the practice squad in September to a salary of $30,000 per week; the minimum for practice-squad players in 2017 is $7,200. There is no maximum.
A fifth-round pick by the Bills in 2016, Williams played 11 games and rushed for 94 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries during his rookie season.
Edebali released.
The Broncos waived veteran outside linebacker Kasim Edebali.
The fourth-year linebacker signed with the Broncos in March after spending the first three years of his NFL career in New Orleans. The Broncos acquired him for help on special teams and for depth on the edge in the wake of DeMarcus Ware’s retirement.
In nine games this season, Edebali played 55 defensive snaps (6.1 percent of the defense) and 163 special-teams snaps (61.5 percent), secondmost among linebackers behind Zaire Anderson. He recorded one tackle and one quarterback hit.
Denver now has an open spot on both the active roster and the practice squad.
Network change.
The NFL announced Tuesday that the Broncos’ Week 13 game against the Dolphins on Dec. 3 in Miami will be aired on Fox instead of CBS, as originally scheduled. Kickoff remains at 11 a.m.
