Steelers’ Shazier back in Pittsburgh

- Julie Jacobson, The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH» Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier was transferred from a Cincinnati hospital to Pittsburgh to continue treatment for a spinal injury suffered during Monday night’s game against the Bengals.

The Steelers say Shazier was transported from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh on Wednesday afternoon and will continue to undergo tests before offering an update on his status.

Shazier left Paul Brown Stadium on a stretcher less than four minutes into his team’s 23-20 victory over Cincinnati after a tackle that left the 25-year-old writhing on the turf, his legs motionless. He underwent extensive testing at University of Cincinnati Medical Center under the care of neurosurgeons David Okonwko and Joseph Cheng.

Iloka’s suspension overturned.

Bengals safety George Iloka had his one-game suspension overturned on appeal, leaving him with a $36,464.50 fine for his hit to Antonio Brown’s head on Monday night.

Iloka and Steelers receiver JuJu SmithSchuster each got a one-game suspension from the NFL in the aftermath of Pittsburgh’s 23-20 win at Paul Brown Stadium. Iloka hit Brown in the head while trying to break up his game-tying touchdown catch.

Smith-Schuster was suspended for leveling linebacker Vontaze Burfict with a blindside hit and then taunting him by standing over him. Smith-Schuster has apologized for the taunting.

Peters to sit a game.

The Chiefs suspended Marcus Peters for Sunday’s game against Oakland after the volatile young cornerback’s embarrassing tantrum during a last-minute loss to the Jets last weekend.

Peters has been involved in a series of incidents that have reflected poorly on the Chiefs, but his antics Sunday in New York pushed his coach, Andy Reid, to act.

Peters threw an official’s flag into the stands after a late penalty, stalked off the field with a smile even though he had not been disqualified, then had to run back to the sideline without wearing socks when he realized his mistake.

Manning back to starting role.

RUTHERFORD, N.J.» Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning is back as the Giants’ starting quarterback.

A week after being benched by former coach Ben McAdoo, Manning was put back into the starting lineup for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys by interim coach Steve Spagnuolo.

Manning had started 210 consecutive games over the past 13-plus season until being replaced by Geno Smith against Oakland last week. The streak was the second longest in NFL history, only surpassed by Brett Favre (297).

Footnotes.

The NFL will look into adding targeting as a specific category for video review. Troy Vincent, the league’s football operations chief, says it is on the agenda to discuss with the competition committee and the players’ union after the season. … The Los Angeles Rams decided not to practice outdoors due to poor air quality around their training complex in Ventura County, where a wildfire has burned more than 100 square miles. The Rams’ complex is about 25 miles from the blaze, but the resulting smoke caused enough problems in air quality to persuade the Rams to go indoors at nearby Cal Lutheran University.
