FLA.» The FORT LAUDERDALE, former student charged with killing 17 people at a Florida high school last month remained silent in court Wednesday and had a plea of not guilty entered on his behalf as police released more recordings that captured the terror of the Valentine’s Day slayings. Nikolas Cruz, shackled and wearing red jail clothes, sat in the jury box with his head bowed and said nothing during the brief hearing. Because he refused to announce his plea, the judge entered it for him on each of the 34 counts he faces.

Gun-trained teacher “accidental­ly” discharges firearm in classroom, officials say, injuring student.

A teacher who is also a reserve police officer trained in firearm use “accidental­ly” discharged a gun Tuesday at Seaside High School in Monterey County, Calif., during a class devoted to public safety, school officials said. A male student was reported to have been wounded. The weapon, which was not described, was pointed at the ceiling, according to a statement from the school, and debris fell from the ceiling.

McCain might return to Senate by summer.

Sen. John McCain continues to undergo treatment in Arizona, but Meghan McCain said it’s possible her father could return to Washington by the summer. The 81-year-old Arizona Republican has been battling a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblasto­ma. He was diagnosed last summer.

Emails suggest HUD Secretary Ben Carson knew of $31,000 dining room set.

New documents made public Wednesday suggest U.S. Housing and Urban Developmen­t Secretary Ben Carson was involved with the purchase of the controvers­ial $31,000 furniture set for his office suite, despite claims by an agency spokesman that he was not aware of it.

An August email obtained by the liberal watchdog group American Oversight shows a HUD staff member making reference to “the furniture the Secretary and Mrs. Carson picked out.” Another email shows a HUD staffer writing Carson’s wife, Candy Carson, to ask if she was available to meet with a designer about “bringing in new furniture.”
