Brock fills’ Broncos cornerback void

- By Nicki Jhabvala

When the Broncos traded veteran corner Aqib Talib to Los Angeles, it became almost imperative that they in turn sign veteran help, especially at nickel corner.

Wednesday, they found that guy.

Former Vikings and 49ers cornerback Tramaine Brock agreed to a one-year contract with the Broncos worth up to $4 million with incentives, providing depth on Denver’s secondary as it moves into the future with veterans Chris Harris and Bradley Roby.

A Mississippi native and an eight-year NFL veteran, Brock signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2010, when Vance Joseph was the 49ers’ defensive backs coach, and spent his first seven seasons with the team, totaling 162 tackles, 11 interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 43 pass-breakups in 80 games, as well as 16 special-teams tackles.

In Brock’s final two seasons with the 49ers, he was moved into a starting role and was highly productive, with a team-high 25 passbreakups and four picks in that span. He was released in April 2017 after he was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence in California. (The case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence, and Brock did not face punishment from the NFL.)

Last August, Brock signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks but was traded less than a month later to the Vikings in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick. In 13 games with Minnesota (playoffs included), he notched six tackles and one pass-breakup.

Brock figures to play in both phases in Denver — as a nickel corner and a special-teams contributor — as the Broncos transition Roby into a full-time starter. The team exercised Roby’s fifthyear contract option, bumping his pay to more than $8.5 million as he assumes the No. 2 corner spot.

The Broncos are considering adding another cornerback in Delvin Breaux, 28. According to a source, the team has been in discussions with Breaux and could bring him in for a physical

The former Saints cornerback played 15 games as a rookie in 2015, but has played only six since because of a broken fibula he suffered in early 2016. The Saints did not tender him as a restricted free agent, allowing him to sign elsewhere as an unrestricted free agent.
