Shake Shack opening March 21

Burger chain hits Colorado with store at Larimer and 30th

- By Allyson Reedy

Colorado, our shack is about to be shaken. The state’s first Shake Shack will open at 30th and Larimer on March 21.

Two other spots will follow — a Highlands Ranch location opening this summer and, pending City Council approval, an outpost at the Denver International Airport.

The East Coast burger chain with a cult-like following (except we don’t know of any cults that you have to wait in line an hour for) is known for its ShackSauceclad burgers, crinkle-cut fries and fresh-spun frozen custard shakes.

Called concretes, the shakes are specifically made for each Shack location, with combinations unique to its surroundings. For example, the Chicago Shack has something called Da S’mores, a vanilla and chocolate custard base mixed with a slice of a local bakery’s s’mores pie.

So what delicious concoctions will we get to enjoy in the Mile High City?

(Please involve Rocky Mountain Oysters, please involve Rocky Mountain Oysters … .)

The two Colorado frozen custard concretes are the Pie Oh My and Glazed Dazed Donut. The Pie is a sure-to-be-beautiful blend of vanilla with seasonal pies from The Long I Pie Shop,

and the Glazed features salted caramel sauce drizzled into vanilla custard, mixed with chocolate toffee and Glazed and Confuzed banana bread doughnuts.

Oh, and there’s also the Colorado-exclusive Green Chile CheddarShack, which is basically a cheeseburger topped with marinated green chiles. Beer from Ratio Beerworks, Great Divide Brewing Company, Denver Beer Co., Funkwerks and Odell Brewing Co. will be available to wash it all down.

Just in case your mind is befuddled with the three Shake Shack locations, various opening dates and what, exactly, will go into your concrete, we put together a handy Shack Synopsis. Clip it out and keep it in your pocket. Do what you have to do.

The first Shake Shack will open at 2995 Larimer St. on March 21 at 11 a.m.

The second Shack will likely be the Highlands Ranch location, opening this summer.

Assuming it gets approved, you’ll also be shaking and shacking at DIA as soon as the end of the year.

It’s a good thing the Green Chile CheddarShack and our Denver concrete flavors sound so delicious, because we’ll be waiting on line a long time to get them.

There you have it: March 21. The day you need to either take off work, or avoid downtown at all costs.
