Home opener brings larger scoreboard, renovated bars, players nap room

A scoreboard 258 percent larger than its predecessor; a quiet room complete with napping spots for sleepy players; and bull testicles. Coors Field is full of surprises for the 2018 Rockies season.

Upgrades and renovations seem to be around every corner of the ballpark and will be on full display for Friday’s home opener against the Atlanta Braves.

Of note: The new scoreboard is 8,369 square feet, with a display size equivalent to 784 60-inch televisions. The board will light up the Denver skyline with 6.8 million LED lights.

To protect fans’ noggins, officials upgraded netting behind home plate and extended it at the same height to the outfield end of each dugout.

Without a heightened fear of foul balls flying at you, there should be more time for merriment.

The Tavern Ballpark, on the first level of the Rooftop, has been rebranded as the Coors Light Silver Bullet Bar, offering more than 25 local and national craft beers.

The Club Level Bar, on the third base side, has been totally renovated, jutting out onto and enclosing what was an outdoor deck. The bar features exposed brick and girders, floor-to-ceiling windows, with great city views, and much more seating than what the former area offered.

There’s plenty new on the food front, including the Rocky Mountain Po’Boy — a sandwich with “Rocky Mountain oysters” — and a green chili macaroni and cheese topped with chorizo and pico de gallo.

Left field now touts a “Hit the Mitt” sign. Every time a Rockies home run nails the sign, UCHealth will make a $5,000 donation through the Colorado Rockies Foundation to Gold Crown Foundation, a nonprofit that offers youth sports and programs to nearly 20,000 boys and girls statewide.

Rockies players, too, have some new stuff.

Their clubhouse offers players beds and chairs for naps in their very own designated quiet room, as well as a barber shop, laundry facility and renovated interview room.

Want to know how to get to the home opener on time, well-fed and stress-free? The Denver Post online has got you covered with some tips and tricks for Friday’s game.

Don’t forget to pack your winter gloves along with your baseball gloves — it’s going to be a cold one.
