» Jailed CURITIBA, BRAZIL former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will register his candidacy to return to the country’s highest office at the deadline for October’s election.

Brazil’s Workers’ Party announced after an eighthour meeting Monday that da Silva remains its candidate and will have his bid registered on the final filing day, Aug. 15. Current legislatio­n allows Brazil’s electoral court to reject da Silva’s candidacy due to his conviction.

Despite being convicted of corruption and money laundering, da Silva leads polls on the race for the presidency, an office he held in 2003-10.

Nicaragua forest fire burns almost 9,000 acres.

The Daily Progress reports the consent decree signed Friday on behalf of the National Socialist Movement is part of ongoing litigation to prevent paramilita­ry activity at demonstrat­ions. The city government, neighborho­od associatio­ns and businesses sued various white supremacis­t and independen­t militia groups that participat­ed in the August rally. The rally was held in part to protest a Confederat­e monument’s removal.

Smoke detectors save lives — and one might have saved the man who died in Saturday’s blaze in Trump Tower.

Todd Brassner’s apartment didn’t have a working smoke detector, FDNY officials said Monday.

Firefighte­rs rushed over to the Fifth Avenue highrise after a building-wide alarm system alerted them to the blaze, officials said.

By the time they arrived, Brassner, a 67-year-old art dealer, was unconsciou­s on the 50th floor.

Brassner later died at the hospital from smoke inhalation, the city medical examiner said Monday.

It’s likely the fire was accidental, sources said.

Duckworth has baby; 1st U.S. senator to give birth in office.

CHICAGO» Sen. Tammy Duckworth has given birth to a baby girl, making her the first U.S. senator to give birth while in office. The Illinois Democrat announced she delivered her second daughter, Maile Pearl Bowlsbey, on Monday. Her office says Duckworth is recovering well and asked for privacy.

Duckworth, a 50-year-old veteran who lost her legs in the Iraq War, is one of only 10 lawmakers who have given birth while in Congress. Her first daughter, Abigail, was born in 2014.

Buckingham, Fleetwood Mac part ways.

Lindsey Buckingham will have to go his own way. The singer-guitarist is out of Fleetwood Mac.

The band said in a statement Monday that Buckingham will not be on their new tour. “Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour,” the statement said. “The band wishes Lindsey all the best.”

He’ll be jointly replaced by Neil Finn of Crowded House and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty’s Heartbreak­ers.

No details were given on what led to the split.
