RAPIDS’ LATE RALLY FALLS 1 GOAL SHORT

CITY» Samuel Armenteros COMMERCE scored twice and the Portland Timbers extended their franchise-record winning streak to six with a 3-2 victory over the Rapids on Saturday night.

Armenteros flicked Sebastian Blanco’s pass around defender Danny Wilson and then beat him to it for a chip finish that opened the scoring for Portland (6-3-2) in the 29th minute at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Julio Cascante gave one back to Colorado (2-7-2) in the 31st with an own goal on a stab attempt to clear away Edgar Castillo’s cross.

Armenteros made it 2-1 in the 37th minute, heading back Tim Howard’s attempt to punch away Blanco’s cross.

Diego Valeri settled Blanco’s diagonal cross and slotted one past Howard in the 57th minute to make it 3-1.

Yannick Boli cut Colorado’s deficit to one with a penalty kick in the ninth minute of stoppage time, but referee Sorin Stoica blew the final whistle before allowing play to resume.

Colorado has lost six in a row, its longest such streak since losing seven straight in 2014.

Love was placed in the NBA’S concussion protocol and the all-star forward will miss Sunday’s series finale of the Eastern Conference finals, a personal blow and yet another challenge for Cleveland to overcome.

The Cavaliers said Love, who inadverten­tly bashed heads with Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum in the first quarter of Game 6, experience­d concussion-like symptoms Saturday before the team’s flight to Boston.

YORK» In a somewhat surprising move, the New York Yankees sent reserve infielder Ronald Torreyes to the minors to clear a roster spot for first baseman Greg Bird.

Grandview High School alumnus Bird was reinstated from the disabled list and was in the starting lineup against Los Angeles, batting sixth and playing first base. He had been sidelined since having right ankle surgery on March 27.

MMA star Diaz arrested. LAS VEGAS» UFC middleweig­ht fighter Nick Diaz was arrested on allegation­s of domestic violence.

Clark County jail records indicate the 35-year-old was booked Thursday night on suspicion of domestic battery by strangulat­ion but was no longer in custody Saturday.

The Las Vegas Review-journal reports that Diaz was arrested after police responded to a report of a domestic disturbanc­e involving a man and a woman.
