A Colorado Springs man faces a crim­i­nal ci­ta­tion af­ter shoot­ing him­self in the leg while try­ing to kill a rac­coon just af­ter mid­night Tues­day.

Don Up­shaw has been cited for a mis­de­meanor charge of pro­hib­ited use of a weapon.

Colorado Springs po­lice an­swered a call of a shoot­ing in the 2500 block of We­ston Road.

When they ar­rived in the neigh­bor­hood, how­ever, they tracked Up­shaw to his garage in the 3000 block of Delta Drive suf­fer­ing from a gun­shot wound to his lower leg.

“The male stated he was at­tempt­ing to shoot a rac­coon on a tele­phone pole, with his re­volver hand­gun, and ac­ci­den­tally shot him­self in the lower leg,” a po­lice re­port says.

Up­shaw was taken to Me­mo­rial Hospi­tal and treated for non-life threat­en­ing in­juries. And cited. The rac­coon es­caped un­scathed.
