FORMER NFL TIGHT END KELLEN WINSLOW JR. ARRESTED IN RAPE

CALIF.» Former NFL tight ENCINITAS, end Kellen Winslow Jr. has been arrested on charges of rape and other sex crimes on the day he was to appear in court on an unrelated burglary charge.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports sheriff’s deputies arrested Winslow on Thursday at his home in the San Diego suburb of Encinitas.

The 34-year-old Winslow was charged with two counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping with intent to commit rape and single counts of forcible sodomy, oral copulation and indecent exposure. He’s free after posting $50,000 bail. He now faces arraignmen­t Friday.

The son of Hall of Fame tight end Kellen Winslow, the younger Winslow spent 10 seasons in the NFL from 2004-13 with Cleveland, Tampa Bay, New England and the N.Y. Jets.

Police: Former pitcher held alleged mail thieves at gunpoint.

GA.» Authoritie­s say a former major league All-Star pitcher held two people at gunpoint after they took mail from his mailbox.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s office said on Facebook that deputies responded just after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to a call from Kevin Brown.

The Telegraph newspaper reports Brown saw two men in a white sports car take his mail before speeding off twice Tuesday. The next day, he waited with a gun and detained the pair when they tried again.

The sheriff’s office arrested two brothers from Miami, one 30 and one 15. They face charges of mail theft and forgery, and the older brother is charged with contributi­ng to the delinquenc­y of a minor.

Pitch breaks left hand of Giants 3B Longoria.

MIAMI» San Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria has a broken left hand after being hit by a pitch.

Longoria was struck by Dan Straily in Miami on Thursday. There is no timetable for Longoria’s return.

The 32-year-old Longoria says he will decide in the next few days if he will need surgery.

Longoria is hitting .246 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs.

Wake Forest suspends two for 3 games, including top QB Hinton.

N.C.» Wake Forest has WINSTON-SALEM, suspended projected starting quarterbac­k Kendall Hinton and tight end Thomas Cole for the first three games of the season.

The team announced the suspension Thursday, saying it was for a violation of team rules. The team didn’t publicly specify the nature of the violation.

Hinton is a redshirt junior with four career starts. He emerged from spring practices as the projected starter after the departure of fouryear starter John Wolford.

Shon, Ryu share LPGA Classic lead at 64.

MICH.» Kelly Shon played her last six holes in 6 under for an 8-under 64 and a share of the lead with So Yeon Ryu on Thursday in the Meijer LPGA Classic.

Shon had a 7-under 29 on her final nine, the front nine at Blythefiel­d Country Club. The former Princeton star played the five par-5 holes in 5 under with an eagle on No. 8.

Born in South Korea, the 26-yearold American is winless in four seasons on the LPGA Tour.

Toronto beats Texas 6-1 in Game 7 to win AHL’s Calder Cup.

TORONTO

Andreas Johnsson had two goals and an assist to help the Toronto Marlies win the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup, 6-1 over the Texas Stars in Game 7 on Thursday.

Mason Marchment also scored twice, Carl Grundstrom and Ben Smith added goals, and Garret Sparks made 29 saves for the Marlies, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ top farm club. The Marlies led the AHL with 112 points during the regular season and won 10 straight playoff games before being pushed to the distance by the Stars, Dallas’ top developmen­t team.— The Associated Press
