Could Elway buy the Broncos?

Readers talk and columnist Mark Kiszla responds

- Kickin’ it with Kiz

Protecting Mr. B’s legacy. Amen to your points regarding the impact of Pat Bowlen’s absence, not only on the Broncos but on so many issues concerning the entire NFL. And the closing words on your column were right on, Kiz. If the family cannot get its act together soon, the team should be sold. I lost my wife to the vicious disease of Alzheimer’s, and I know the pain it can cause to all who love its victims. I would ask the principals involved not to destroy Mr. B’s legacy of building one of the most respected franchises in sports. Chuck, Boulder

Kiz: John Elway will be 61 years old when his current contract to oversee football operations expires in 2021. So long as Elway keeps the fan base happy, the team can probably wait another four seasons to elevate Brittany Bowlen to the chair long occupied by her father. Should last-place finishes become the norm, however, public pressure will increase on Joe Ellis and his fellow trustees to find a longterm owner. If the Bowlen family decides to sell, could Elway find the financial backing to buy the team?

Dispassionate review. That was an excellent column about the effects of Bowlen’s absence on the Broncos. You have hit the nail on the head and to my knowledge, you are the first prominent Denver sports pundit to say it. Will, Estes Park

Kiz: Whether talking about the Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanche or Rockies, it is increasingly easy to find coverage of local teams with a rooting interest in their success. So I offer humble thanks for your recognition that honest sports commentary without strings attached is valuable.

Good-time Charlie’s got the blues. Who deserves to be an all-star: Adam Ottavino or Trevor Story? It could be neither, considering the Rockies are dropping like a rock in the National League West. Davey, rock star

Kiz: The Rockies did more than swoon in June. They cratered. Here’s what I don’t get: I know everyone loves Charlie Blackmon. He’s got the beard and the coolest walk-up song on earth. But I’ve been told he will make the all-star roster on reputation. Really? Unless you’re fixated on home runs, Blackmon’s offensive production has been pedestrian, at best. His regression to the mean from a phenomenal 2017 season is a major factor in Colorado’s disappointing record.

Define anniversary. I am curious why the Rockies are celebrating their 25th anniversary in their 26th season. They started playing in 1993. That made 2017 their 25th season. Count ’em. I thought baseball people were good at statistics. Randy, Denver

Kiz: The Rockies are defining their anniversary correctly, as in the number of years after a wedding. But hey, I can relate. Ask my wife about all the times I’ve forgotten our anniversary.

And today’s parting shot is a polite golf clap for reminding fans football isn’t the only game worth watching in Broncos Country:

Your column on the U.S. Senior Open was delightful. I’m always amazed when I start reading some silly golf story, when I don’t care about golf. Please hang on at The Denver Post, Kiz. Dianne, loves football
