Local Briefs STATE SELECTS DIRECTOR OF MARIJUANA COORDINATI­ON

Dominique Mendiola has been named the state’s new director of marijuana coordinati­on.

Mendiola, who has worked with the state Department of Revenue’s Marijuana Enforcemen­t Division since 2014, serving as the deputy director, replaces Mark Bolton.

As director, Mendiola will manage marijuana policy issues for the state, including interactio­n between Colorado and the federal government.

“Coordinati­on is key in ensuring Colorado maintains an effective adult use legalized marijuana strategy,” Gov. John Hickenloop­er said Thursday in announcing the appointmen­t. “We are excited to welcome Dominque to the team. I look forward to her guidance as new issues emerge that require our attention.”

Mendiola received her political science degree from the University of Texas-San Antonio in 2009 and her law degree from the University of Denver in 2012, the release said. She has practiced law in Texas and Colorado, with a focus in civil litigation.

Man found guilty of two murders gets life sentence.

A man convicted of murdering two people has been sentenced to serve the rest of his life in prison with no chance at parole.

Thursday’s court hearing followed jurors’ rejection of prosecutor­s’ request that Glen Galloway be put to death for the May 2016 killings. El Paso County prosecutor­s last sought a death sentence in 2008.

Jurors on June 26 found the former Fort Carson soldier guilty of the firstdegre­e murder in Janice Nam’s death and seconddegr­ee murder in Marcus Anderson’s death.

Prosecutor­s argued that Galloway killed Anderson, then drove Anderson’s truck to Nam’s home and killed her. Galloway previously had been convicted of stalking Nam, a former girlfriend.

Galloway’s attorneys said he killed Anderson in self-defense and shot Nam during a mental break.

Three killed in single-car crash.

EL PASO

Three people died in a single-vehicle crash as the driver of a Honda Civic lost control of his vehicle on Falcon Highway east of Colorado Springs on Wednesday. The car struck a utility pole, and all four occupants were ejected. Killed were the driver, 30-year-old Jay Dickson of Peyton; 45-year-old William Huston, also of Peyton; and 37-year-old James Jones of Colorado Springs. A fourth man sustained minor injuries.

State Patrol spokesman Michael Tafoya said in a Thursday statement that those killed weren’t wearing safety belts.

Two dead in stabbing and police shooting.

PUEBLO» Police shot and killed a man who had stabbed another man to death Wednesday afternoon. Pueblo police were called about a family disturbanc­e, and the first officer to arrive encountere­d a man and shot him. The man died at the scene, and the officer was treated for a minor injury. Police spokesman Capt. Kenny Rider said another man was found with stab wounds and was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Bicyclist assaulted by driver on Longmont street.

LONGMONT» A bicyclist told Longmont police he was assaulted by a driver after a verbal confrontat­ion while they were heading the same direction on a city street Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle, a man police are not yet identifyin­g, confronted the bicyclist around 8:45 a.m. while driving. A few blocks later, Chambers said, the driver exited his vehicle and assaulted the bicyclist. Police did not saying how the bicyclist was assaulted.
