New play-by-play voices for radio, TV

Altitude shifts Moser from radio as McGahey takes over on airwaves

- By Mike Chambers

The Avalanche and Altitude Sports & Entertainment have promoted Marc Moser to be their television play-by-play announcer and hired Conor McGahey to call games from the radio booth.

McGahey replaces Moser, who has been the play-by-play radio announcer for the last 10 years. McGahey is a Colorado native who was the pregame, intermission and postgame host for the Vegas Golden Knights on AT&T SportsNet last season — in addition to calling University of Denver hockey and Colorado Rapids games for Altitude TV.

McGahey attended DU and was the public address announcer at Pioneers games before serving in the same capacity for the Avalanche, Colorado Buffaloes football and the Broncos.

“I am truly honored and fortunate to be given this task,” McGahey wrote in a text message to The Denver Post on Wednesday. “I fell in love with the Avs at McNichols Arena on Oct. 6, 1995 (the team’s first game in Colorado, a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings), and now I get to live every second of this team with people who love them as much as I have and do. It’s truly a blessing to be such a vessel for such a wonderful fan base. It’s good to be home.”

Moser and McGahey will be

formally introduced in their new positions Thursday during the Vic Lombardi Show from 7-10 a.m. on Altitude 950 AM.

In a phone interview, Kenny Miller, the executive vice president and general manager of Altitude Sports and Entertaining, said he “couldn’t be more excited about the team.”

“You have Marc Moser, who has paid his dues — who’s equally as good of a person as a broadcaster. Mark is a tremendous talent who has tremendous chemistry with (TV analyst) Peter McNab and (locker room host) Lauren Gardner, whatever the platforms,” Miller said. “What people don’t see is how much time Peter McNab and Marc Moser spend breaking down NHL players and everything about the Avalanche. Avalanche fans should be ecstatic about this team.”

Regarding McGahey, Miller said: “He’s got the voice of God. Now he’s going to be calling the games for the team he grew up loving. How cool is that? Conor has a wellrecognized voice because of the Broncos, University of Colorado, DU, Rockies baseball and everything else he has done. Locally and regionally, you’ve got a home-grown kid who is now making his way with the Avalanche.”

Moser has ties to the Avalanche dating to 1997-98, when he was the in-studio host and producer of all radio broadcasts. Moser also was a daily sports talk show host and host of “Avalanche Talk.”

From Sacramento, Calif., Moser came to Colorado in 1996 after working as sports director at KFBK Radio in his hometown. He was the play-byplay announcer for the Cal State Sacramento football and basketball teams.

Moser replaces Mike Haynes, who recently resigned after working with the Avs in radio or television since their 1995 inception.
