THREE LANES OF I-25 TO CLOSE FOR PAVING

Southbound traffic on a stretch of Interstate 25 will be slow overnight Friday because three lanes will be closed for constructi­on.

About 9 p.m. Friday, crews will start paving southbound lanes of the highway between Arapahoe and Dry Creek roads, according to the Colorado Department of Transporta­tion. The work is scheduled to be complete, and lanes reopened, at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Commerce City man sentenced to 48 years in prison for his wife’s death.

Commerce City man was sentenced Thursday to 48 years in prison for the murder of his wife.

Derek Michael Johnston, 38, initially was charged with first-degree murder in the 2017 killing of 38year-old Melissa Ehrmann. Johnston pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, which has a sentencing range of 35 to 48 years, according to the district attorney’s office.

Woman charged in Denver light rail stabbing.

A woman arrested in connection with a stabbing on a light rail train now faces two felony assault charges, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.

Maressa Christina Archuleta, 26, began threatenin­g light rail passengers while holding a knife when the train stopped in the 1700 block of California Street on July 19, according to Denver police documents.

According to police: A man, yet to be identified, tried to distract Archuleta to prevent her from attacking the other passengers and was cut on his forehead above his left eye. An unidentifi­ed woman then tried to knock her down from behind. Archuleta turned around and stabbed the woman in her right side. Other passengers rushed Archuleta, held her to the ground and pushed her off the train.

Former Colorado deputy who molested young boy avoids prison.

A former El Paso County sheriff’s deputy who molested a young boy has avoided prison as part of a plea deal. The Gazette reports 44-year-old Donald Fair pleaded guilty to child sexual assault and was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years to life on supervised probation. Fair says the crime happened during a period of long hours at work combined with sleepless nights and repeated blackouts stemming from post-traumatic stress disorder. He is an Army combat veteran. His attorney said he was wounded twice overseas.

Boulder County man accused of groping woman multiple times receives deferred sentence, community service.

A Lafayette man accused of repeatedly repeatedly groping a woman last year has pleaded guilty to a misdemeano­r and was given a two-year deferred sentence. Ryann Rice, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual contact on July 13 in exchange for prosecutor­s dropping charges of sexual assault, according to court records.

Man gets 12 years for flare gun attack.

A man who shot another man in the head with a flare gun at a gas station has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The Reporter-Herald reports 30-year-old Ryan Johnson pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree assault and was immediatel­y sentenced for the Oct. 9 attack.

Investigat­ors say video taken at a Loveland gas station showed Johnson pulling up in a car, getting out and walking toward the victim’s truck. It then shows a large puff of smoke and a red flare. The injured man was treated for serious burns on his head and body. Police say the men know each other.

Woman accused of killing her fiancé.

A woman is accused of stabbing to death her fiancé after an argument over suspected infidelity.

The Gazette reported that 31-year-old Jacqueline Souza was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder Saturday in the death of 33-year-old Brandon Watkins.

According to court documents, Souza called 911, and police found Watkins “unresponsi­ve and bloody.” A steak knife was found near his body.
