10 YEARS FOR IGNITING CAR WITH HUSBAND ASLEEP INSIDE

- — Elizabeth Hernandez, The Denver Post

A Wheat Ridge woman was sentenced to 10 years in prison after dousing a vehicle with gasoline while her husband was asleep inside and tossing a match — igniting the car while her 6-yearold grandson stood beside her, according to Jefferson and Gilpin Counties District Attorney’s Office.

Andrea Toni Moreno, 48, was sentenced in Jefferson County District Court on Aug. 6.

According to the district attorney, Moreno and her husband, Darrell Gonzales, had been drinking and arguing July 20, 2017, prompting Gonzales to leave the Wheat Ridge home at 5075 Swadley St. to cool off. After returning, Gonzales discovered he was locked out of the house, with his belongings thrown onto the lawn. Gonzales decided to sleep in his vehicle.

When the Arvada Fire Department spotted the car on fire while responding to an unrelated call about 11:30 p.m., they found Gonzales had escaped and was standing in the garage.

A jury found Moreno guilty of attempted first-degree murder, fourth-degree arson, child abuse and violation of a protection order.
