WATTS SENT TO PRISON IN WISCONSIN

- — Noelle Phillips and Elise Schmelzer, The Denver Post

Christopher Watts, the Frederick man who murdered his pregnant wife and two young daughters, is in prison in Wisconsin, online records show.

The Colorado Department of Corrections transferred Watts this week for security concerns; officials had kept his location a secret. But Watts’ name shows up on a website where people can send money to Wisconsin prison inmates.

The website shows Watts is housed at the Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wis. A Wisconsin Department of Corrections spokesman would not confirm or deny Watts’ incarceration.

A Colorado corrections spokesman has confirmed the transfer but not the new location.

Watts pleaded guilty Nov. 6 to strangling his wife, Shanann, and smothering their daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3.

Although Watts pleaded guilty, he has never explained his motive. He had been having an affair, and case files show the Watts couple had been struggling in the months leading up to the deaths.

It is common for state prison systems to swap inmates, especially those who are high profile. A new Colorado state law requires corrections officials to inform victims’ families of transfers and locations.
