MAN KILLED AFTER CRASHING SNOWMOBILE

JUNCTION» A man died GRAND in a snowmobile crash in Mesa County. Authoritie­s said the incident happened at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police told KKCO-TV that the man failed to negotiate a turn while riding his snowmobile in a canal. He died at the scene.

The man’s name was not released, but he was described as being in his 40s.

Backcountr­y skier killed on Quandary Peak. A backcountr­y skier died Sunday after being critically injured at about 13,400 feet elevation on Quandary Peak.

He has not yet been identified and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Summit County Rescue Group responded to the call at about 11:20 a.m. Sunday. They used a Flight For Life helicopter and tried to provide advanced life support but were not able to save him.

The rescue group said he was skiing with a companion and the companion was flown to the command post at Blue Lakes Road and Highway 9.

This is the second death on the peak in the last six months. A 67-year-old man died after he suffered a heart attack about half a mile up the Quandary Peak Trail while hiking in late July. — Staff and news services
