ZIMBABWE DOUBLES PRICE OF GAS

ZIMBABWE» Zimbabwe’s HARARE, president has more than doubled the price of gasoline, hoping the increase will end severe shortages that are fueling public anger even as he departs on a foreign trip to other countries in search of investment.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the increase in the state-controlled price of fuel should ease the shortages that have gripped the country in recent weeks. The president left on a trip that will end with his attendance at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerlan­d, angering critics who say he should stay at home to deal with the crisis.

UTAH» Two people MURRAY, were wounded in a shooting just outside a popular Utah mall Sunday where hundreds of scared shoppers hunkered down until police arrived to evacuate the building.

Two people in their early 20s were shot at about 1:30 p.m. near the southeast entrance to the Fashion Place mall in Murray, a suburb south of Salt Lake City, said Murray police Officer Kenny Bass. The man was in critical condition while the woman was in serious.

Police were looking for three people suspected in the shooting, Bass said. He said the shooting may be gang related.

Indonesia finds Lion Air jet’s cockpit voice recorder.

JAKARTA» Navy divers have located the cockpit voice recorder of a Lion Air jet that crashed into the Java Sea, Indonesian officials said Monday, in a possible boost to the accident investigat­ion.

Ridwan Djamaluddi­n, a deputy maritime minister, told reporters that remains of some of the 189 people who died in the crash were also discovered at the seabed location.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet plunged into the Java Sea minutes after taking off from Jakarta on Oct. 29, killing everyone on board.

Water line breaks as auto show gets ready to open.

DETROIT» A boilwater advisory has been issued for Detroit after a water main break.

The area includes hotels and Cobo Center, where the annual auto show is opening this week for news media from around the world. Drinking fountains at the convention hall were turned off Sunday.

No one should lose water service, but pressure could be low. In addition, people should boil water before drinking it or use bottled water.

Mayor stabbed on stage, condition very serious.

POLAND» A convicted WARSAW, criminal with a knife rushed on to the stage during the finale of a charity event and stabbed a Polish mayor in the abdomen multiple times before shouting that he did it for political revenge, in an attack that left the politician fighting for his life.

Gdansk Mayor Pawel Adamowicz grabbed his belly and collapsed on stage during the “Lights to Heaven” fundraiser organized by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity on Sunday. Adamowicz was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery.
