New Mexico athletic director Paul Krebs, who left in 2017 amid questions over spending, was charged Wednesday with fraud, money laundering and other felonies, state prosecutor­s said.

The attorney general’s office said in a criminal complaint that Krebs used his position “to pursue his private interest by planning and participat­ing in a trip to Scotland that was paid for by the University of New Mexico using public money.”

Prosecutor­s said Krebs also intentiona­lly misappropr­iated public funds and used them to pay for him and other associates to be part of the Scotland golf tour. Krebs then circumvent­ed university policy and signed a contract committing the school to pay up to $250,000, court documents said.

The Phoenix Suns guard will look to defend his NBA All-Star 3-point championsh­ip from a year ago against brothers Stephen and Seth Curry on Feb. 16 in Charlotte.

Stephen Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors, won the event in 2015, while brother Seth, who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers, is about to compete in his first 3-point contest.

Charlotte’s Kemba Walker, Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki, Portland’s Damian Lillard, Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton, Toronto’s Danny Green, Brooklyn’s Joe Harris and Sacramento’s Buddy Hield round out the field.

Wild captain Koivu to miss rest of season.

» Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament and cartilage in his right knee in an on-ice collision, a major setback for a team with a tenuous hold on a playoff spot.

The 35-year-old Koivu tore his ACL and meniscus and will have surgery on Friday, the Wild announced Wednesday. He was hurt Tuesday night at Buffalo when he collided with Sabres forward Tage Thompson in the first period of Minnesota’s 5-4 shootout loss.

» The Nashville Predators have made a pair of trades adding size and toughness by adding Brian Boyle from the New Jersey Devils and bringing back forward Cody McLeod from the New York Rangers.

The Predators swapped a secondroun­d pick in June’s NHL draft for Boyle and will send the Rangers a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NHL draft for McLeod in Wednesday’s trades.

MLB said in a statement that the investigat­ion found the Mariners did not violate baseball’s “workplace code of conduct, or applicable antidiscri­mination law,” in the treatment of Lorena Martin or in her terminatio­n by the club. Martin was the club’s director of high performanc­e for one season, then was fired following the 2018 season.

Utah school becomes latest to ditch American Indian name.

The Iron County School Board voted 3-2 to approve a recommenda­tion from a committee that concluded Cedar High School should stop using the term that critics consider a racial slur. — The Associated Press
