Programming ideas, assistance of partners sought

- By Joe Rubino

With redevelopment work in full swing, officials with Denver’s National Western Center are looking for partners that will help them deliver on lofty goals for turning the grounds best known for hosting the stock show every January into an international epicenter for regenerative agriculture, Western American culture and more.

The “Cultivate” campaign officially went live on at nationalwesterncenter.com/cultivate Wednesday. The public engagement effort, which runs through April 20, invites business owners, nonprofit organizations and interested folks to pitch ideas for programs, events and more at the National Western Center and become a partner in carrying out those plans on the campus and online.

“This is a local and global call for ideas,” said Brad Buchanan, CEO of the National Western Center Authority. “We can put our precious resources to creating an event or create 100 events by working with partners and interested parties together to collaborate on what it is they are looking to do.”

In the midst of a $1 billion overhaul, the National Western campus will be home to 2.2 million square feet of indoor and outdoor space by 2024. Buchanan’s authority doesn’t plan to wait that long to start planning events and programs, he said. Ideas of how to use existing historic buildings there, forthcoming Colorado State University facilities or even the National Western Center’s online platform are welcome.

Officials are distributing flyers to alert community residents about the “Cultivate” effort. A public meeting is planned for March 28. After collecting input for one month, the authority will put together a report that should be ready for release this summer.

“We are looking for ideas that will fulfill the promise of this place and have a positive effect on everyone from local residents to the global community,” John Zapien, a member of authority’s board of directors and a resident of the Globeville neighborhood, said in a news release.
