Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart set Red Rocks date

- By John Wenzel

Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart are making good on their promise to turn a handful of co-headlining dates into a national tour.

The stand-ups and actors, best known from Comedy Central’s “Chappelle’s Show” and “The Daily Show,” respectively, will play Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Aug. 9, promoter Live Nation announced this week.

“It’s so hard for us to line up our schedules sometimes, but we’re really hoping we can bang out some of these dates and then put together something a little more extensive,” Stewart told The Denver Post last year, just before visiting Colorado Springs to kick off The Warrior Games, an ath- letic competition for wounded military veterans.

“We’d love to do a variety of places — holes in the wall to larger venues — and just play around with it,” he said. “We want to do our own stuff but also some stuff together on stage. We’re trying to figure it out right now, but I’m sure it’s going to happen.”

It’s happening. Tickets for the Aug. 9 Red Rocks show will cost $69.75-$169.75 and go on sale through axs.com or by

calling 888-929-7849. A “registered fan” pre-sale (for which the signup deadline has passed) starts at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, while any leftovers are on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Friday, March 22.

Tickets for the event also will be on sale at the Denver Coliseum box office from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. every Saturday until they are sold out. All tickets sold there require a Flash Seats account and ID matching the account profile.

Chappelle, who’s known for his hatred of cellphones at his concerts, has pioneered the use of locked bags for phones at shows — wherein patrons hand over their smartphones to be put into a bag that can only be opened by a venue staffer, at least until the show’s conclusion. The national trend was started, in part, at previous Chappelle shows at Comedy Works in Lower Downtown, after which it quickly spread to Red Rocks Amphitheatre and other venues, artists and even metro area schools.

“Anyone caught with a cellphone in the venue will be immediately ejected,” promoters warned of the Aug. 9 Red Rocks show, noting the smartphone bagging program will be in full effect.

The Denver date joins seven previously announced shows from last week, including three in Boston (June 11-13), two in Houston (June 21-22) and two in El Paso (June 23-24).
