The Denver Pioneers and Colorado College Tigers fall at the NCHC Frozen Faceoff.

The University of Denver was shut out 3-0 by Minnesota Duluth in the semifinals of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff on Friday night in St. Paul, Minn.

The Pioneers and Bulldogs battled to a 0-0 tie until 42 seconds into the third period, when Cole Koepke scored for Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs added two empty-net goals in the final two minutes of the game.

In the other semifinal, Colorado College lost to St. Cloud State 5-2. The Tigers scored first at 9:47 of the first period, but the Huskies added two at 12:27 and 12:51 of the first. The Tigers added one in the third, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Huskies.

Denver will face Colorado College in the third-place game at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth will play for the NCHC title at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Truck driver involved in hockey team bus crash gets 8 years.

SASKATCHEW­AN» The driver MELFORT, whose transport truck crashed into a hockey team bus in Canada, killing 16 people, has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Thirteen others were injured when Jaskirat Singh Sidhu’s semitraile­r loaded with peat moss collided with the Humboldt Broncos’ bus in rural Saskatchew­an. Sidhu had pleaded guilty earlier this year to 29 counts of dangerous driving

The Broncos were on their way to a playoff game in the Saskatchew­an Junior Hockey League.

Judge Inez Cardinal said Friday that Sidhu’s remorse and guilty plea were mitigating factors, but added she had to consider the number of people who died or were severely injured and face lifelong challenges.

Indicted UCLA men’s soccer coach resigns.

ANGELES» UCLA men’s LOS soccer coach Jorge Salcedo has resigned in the wake of his indictment in the college admissions scandal.

School spokeswoma­n Liza David said Friday that Salcedo quit after being on leave since the charges became public last week.

Salcedo appeared in court last week after he was accused of taking payments totaling $200,000 in exchange for helping one male and one female applicant gain admission to UCLA under the false pretense that they were soccer recruits when they didn’t play competitiv­e soccer.

Vandy fires coach Bryce Drew after 9-23 year, winless in SEC.

TENN.» The worst season in the history of Vanderbilt men’s basketball has cost coach Bryce Drew his job.

Vanderbilt went 9-23 and was the first team in 65 years to go winless in the Southeaste­rn Conference. Drew had a 40-59 record in three seasons with the Commodores.

The announceme­nt Friday by new athletic director Malcolm Turner came a week after the Commodores’ season ended.

PGA Tour suspends Robert Garrigus for failed drug test.

PALM HARBOR,

Robert Garrigus became the first PGA Tour player suspended for a drug of abuse, saying on Twitter that he had a relapse with marijuana.

The tour announced Friday that the 41-year-old Garrigus, whose only PGA Tour victory was at Disney at the end of the 2010 season, has been suspended for three months under the conduct policy that applies to substances of abuse.

While marijuana is legal in some states, it is on the banned substance list under the PGA Tour’s antidoping policy.

Top-ranked Sung Hyun Park, Yu Liu tied for Founders Cup lead.

PHOENIX» Sung Hyun Park shot her second straight 6-under-par 66 on Friday at the Founders Cup for a share of the lead with Yu Liu.

Coming off a victory three weeks ago in Singapore, the top-ranked Park birdied five of the first six holes on her final nine. She lost the outright lead with a bogey on the par-4 ninth. Liu had 10 birdies in an 8-under 64.
