Indians put Kluber on injured list, star’s return uncertain

-

C LEVEL A ND» Corey Kluber doesn’t need surgery on his broken right arm — for now.

And, for the time being, the Indians season is cracked, not crushed.

Cleveland placed the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner on the 10-day injured list Friday, and the club didn’t provide a definitive timeline for his return to the rotation.

Kluber sustained a non-displaced fracture of his ulna bone on Wednesday night when he was hit by a line drive during a start against Miami.

He had more imaging tests taken Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic, and the results confirmed the initial diagnosis.

Manager Terry Francona said Kluber’s arm will be immobilized for the next week — the Indians will keep him out of the dugout to prevent his arm from being bumped — and the 33-year-old will be X-rayed once a week.

The cast will be removed in three weeks, when doctors will decide what’s next.

Braves’ Gausman pitch to Urena. ejected for

MI A MI» Atlanta Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman has been ejected in the second inning for throwing a pitch behind Marlins pitcher Jose Urena, who was involved in a melee between the teams last season.

Gausman’s first pitch to Urena was a 97 mph knee-high fastball that sailed behind the batter, and plate umpire Jeff Nelson immediately signaled the ejection.

The game was Urena’s first against the Braves since he was suspended for six games for intentionally hitting Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna Jr. on the arm with a pitch last August, triggering a bench-clearing confrontation.

Reds bring up top prospect Nick Senzel for debut.

With an offense that’s last in the NL, the Reds decided to bring up top prospect Nick Senzel and let him continue learning a new position at the major league level.

The Reds brought up Senzel for his major league debut at the start of their series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday.

The 23-year-old outfielder was batting second and playing center, the spot they’ve been aiming him toward since the offseason.

“We don’t bring guys up to put them on the sidelines,” said Dick Williams, the president of baseball operations. “We expect him to inject some energy and help the outfield defense. Nick is ready to do that.”

Senzel was taken second overall in the 2016 amateur draft out of Tennessee.

He signed for a $6.2 million bonus, but his ascent was slowed by bouts of vertigo and a broken right index finger last season.

Giants part ways with Gerardo Parra, call up Mike Gerber.

CINCINN A TI» Outfielder Gerardo Parra’s disappointing April prompted the San Francisco Giants to replace him with a player who’s been hot in the minors.

The Giants designated Parra for assignment on Friday before the start of a series against the Reds.

Mike Gerber was called up to take is spot in a lineup that’s struggling to hit.

“We’ll miss him, but it was time to give Gerber a look,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s going to be in the big leagues somewhere because he can impact a game defensively.
